Although, I am in support of a better way forward for my country, is this the best option out of whatever mess that the oil industry has found itself in? SACHET/BOTTLED WATER PACKAGING BUSINESS

Pure Water Business is of two types: Bottled Water and Sachet Water Businesses respectively. The difference between these two is only in the packaging; one packages with plastic bottles whereas the other packages with polyethylene sachets otherwise referred to as cellophane/nylon bags.

Irrespective of source or packaging, without adequate clean water one suffers dehydration and eventual death. Water provides the medium in which all biochemical reactions take place. Pure portable water is very essential for healthy living. It has no substitute. The only way to produce this pure water is via treatment.

The demand for safe drinking water in Nigeria cannot be overemphasized, considering the inability of the governments to provide adequate pipe borne water to a major chunk of the populace.

Up till the late 90s, the most popular way of packaging water was hand-tied cellophane sachets of tap water usually called "pure water” and sold for N1.00. Though this aspect of packaging water is simpler, cheaper and enhances easy entry and exit, provided higher turnover because of the cheapness of the products, it was been abused by a lot of people.

At the turn of the new millenium, a more organized means of production of pure water emerged and gradually took over: although this time with sealed polyethylene sachet type of packaging, it inherited pure water as its name from the older means which shortly disappered. All this while, the bottled water brands like SWAN Spring Water were in existence but since its cost was out of reach of the poor majority, pure water became the new order.

Well-packaged water in these plastic bottles or food-grade polyethylene sachets has so far become a ready alternative for the growing population of over 150 million people. Pure packaged water attracts patronage from hotels, schools, market places, hospitals, stadiums etc. No doubt water has been found to be the fastest selling commodity in Nigeria today.

Considering the increasing need for good quality drinking water packaged under very stringent hygienic condition as well as the the costly effect of water borne diseases like craw-craw, worm infections, water blindness, dysentery, diarrhea, typhoid fever, cholera to mention but few, it becomes paramount to go for clean (pure) water packaging business to deliver Nigerians this high-demand product called Pure Water in local parlance.

From the above, investment into innovative purification and packaging of portable (colorless, odorless and tasteless) drinking water has turned out a very lucrative business.

Presently a plastic bottling can for pure water production is taking over. This is found to be more lucrative too. This is because not every investor can invest on it like ordinary nylon/cellophane packaging of water. All attention is shifting to the plastic bottled water. The plant can be set up at any part of the country. The plant consists of water treatment plant made up of seal sedimentation, tank, filters, suction pump, alpha chambers, pressure gauge and stainless tank and tama flow 700 and industrial purification system. This machine incorporates from consecutive operations-pre-filters, activated carbon, polisher and ultra violet sterilizer. It also has v/v designed for 30-3 L/min maximum flow rate, 60 PSIG Max pressure, 220 V/50 Hz voltage, 254-barometer wavelength lamp and 99per cent bacteria elimination rate.

The plant can produce 30 liters of well-purified water per minute. This implies that it can purify about 14,400 liters of water per shift of 8 hours.

When the operating costs are deducted the investor would be recording N6.096 million in the first year and N9.030 million in the fifth year.

The Earth has 1,386,000,000 km3 of water total but only 2.5 percent of that is fresh water (i.e. 35,029,000 km3 or 9,254,661,800 gallons of fresh water).

Why is fluid important?

Water is essential for the growth and maintenance of our bodies and is an important component in the diet. The British Dietetic Association guidelines state that an average adult should consume 2.5 litres of water of which 1.8 litres (or 5 x 330 ml cans; 7 x 250 ml glasses) must be in fluid form, the remainder being obtained from foods. For children to maintain their correct water level of 60-70% body weight, they need to consume up to 2 litres of fluid every day. This intake needs to be increased during periods of hot weather or during and after periods of physical activity in order to avoid dehydration.

What are the effects of dehydration?

Dehydration is caused by consuming too little fluid and can cause symptoms such as headaches, tiredness and loss of concentration. Adults eliminate around 2.5 litres of water per day, through urine, perspiration and respiration. In children, this varies greatly according to the outside temperature, age and activity level of the child, as well as other factors. Children do not instinctively drink enough to replenish the fluids lost during prolonged activity or play periods and evidence has shown that they consequently become dehydrated. Water is classified as bottled water or sachet water (pure water) if it meets all applicable standards, is sealed in a sanitary container/package and is sold for human consumption. Bottled/sachet water cannot contain sweeteners or chemical additives (other than flavours, extracts or essences) and must be calorie-free and sugar-free. Flavours, extracts and essences, derived from spice or fruit, can be added to bottled water, but these additions must comprise less than one percent by weight of the final product. Beverages containing more than the one-percent-by-weight flavour limit are classified as soft drinks, not packaged water. In addition, packaged water may be sodium-free or contain “very low” amounts of sodium. Some packaged waters contain natural or added carbonation.

Water Purification Technology

The packaged water business requires a high level of water purification so consumers’ health wouldn’t be compromised for monetary considerations. The target market for packaged water products includes everyone, from the young to the old. It covers:

• Marketplaces

• Eateries, posh and local restaurants

Technical and Other Requirements

Organisations that are into packaged water are to seek registration with The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), which is the regulatory agency in the country that monitors and controls the food and drugs sector. NAFDAC insists that water and water base industries must not be close to a cemetery, abattoir, petrol station, refuse dump, sewage system, saw mill, etc. Owners of this business need to get clearance from NAFDAC before commencing production. Let’s take for instance Lagos state with an unofficial population of about 18 million people (from the Lagos state website). If 85% of this number patronise packaged water products, what we have will be 15.5 million potential customers. If 75% of this market take sachet water, then the number comes to approximately 12 million, while 3.5 million represent those who take bottled water. If your business captures 1% of the sachet water market, you will be serving 120,000 customers. If every day, each one takes 3 sachets of water on the average, we are talking about 360,000 sachets. Since a bag of sachet water contains 20, this means you’ll be selling 18,000 sachet water bags daily. If the cost of producing a bag is N40 and you’re giving it out at N55, you’ll be making N15 per bag as profit and N270,000 daily. For a 24-working day period in a month, you will be talking about N6.48million as profit monthly and N58.32 million for a 9-month business year (factoring in the rainy season). If you achieve 50% of your income potential in the first year, you’ll be talking about N29 million profit. I have not worked out the income and returns on bottled water.

MTN Glo Airtel Etisalat: How To Transfer Credit To Another Phone

You can transfer recharge credit from one phone to another on any of these three networks in Nigeria: MTN, Glo, Zain, Etisalat. If you don't know how to go about it, then here is an article to guide you.
MTN to MTN

Firstly, You need to Create or Change your secret pin.

The secret pin is a 4 digit number which give you access to transfer credit to another MTN subscriber.
And this Pin is kept secret, so that another person might not tramsfer your credit.

How To To Change My Transfer Pin
Changing Password Using Sms

Send the following in an sms 0000 1234 1234 to 777

0000 Is Your Default Pin
1234 Is Your New Pin
1234 Is Your New Pin Confirmation.

You can change 1234 to your desired pin and immediately you send it you will receive a message telling you your pin has been changed successfully.

To change your PIN via USSD

Dial *601*old/default PIN*New PIN*New PIN# then press Send/Ok.
For example if you want to change your default PIN (0000) to 7890, then dial:
*601*0000*7890*7890# then press Send/OK.
If PIN change is successful, you will receive an SMS from MTN informing you of the successful change.

How To Transfer Credit On MTN

Type the following in an sms format

Transfer 07063860232 100 1234 and Send it to 777.

Red = Transfer Code
Blue = Recipient Number
Green = Amount To Transfer
Black = Secret Pin

Immediately the message is sent, you will receive a message telling you to confirm your request by replying YES. Then you confrim by sending Yes to 777 in sms instantly.

After your confirmation, your credit will be transferred from your phone to the other subscriber.

To transfer credit via USSD.
Dial *600*Recipient’s phone number*amount in Naira*PIN# then press Send/Ok.

Example:

You will receive a text message confirming successful transfers.

Glo to Glo

Before you transfer credit on the Glo network, you must activate Glo ME2U Feature first. To activate Glo Me2u.

Send "Act" to 131 without quote. They will send you back SMS asking you to create change your password/PIN for securtiy purposes.

Today we are happy to announce the availability of the text suggestions and autocomplete feature of Google Scribe, which is graduating from Google Labs and can now be found in Blogger in Draft.

Google Scribe helps you write more efficiently by suggesting common words and phrases as you type. Google Scribe supports Arabic, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Swedish. The language is automatically detected using the text in the post.

Enabling Google Scribe is easy. Simply click the pencil icon in the toolbar within the Post Editor.

After Google Scribe is turned on, suggestions will appear in gray as you type, and you can accept them by hitting the spacebar or by typing a punctuation mark, such as a comma, period or question mark.

If you would like to receive more than one suggestion at a time, select "Show Multiple Suggestions" from the drop-down menu next to the pencil icon. You will then be able to see several options in a drop-down menu as you type.

Here are some keyboard shortcuts you may find handy. If you use a Mac, you can use the shortcuts below by replacing Ctrl with Command key (or 'Apple' key)

If you’re a blogspot platform blogger and want to show HTML source codes in your blog posts then you must had a hard time how to make it done.

Check out Code BlogKori. You can see that I’ve created special boxes for those HTML codes and the code remains intact inside the post. It’s a nice trick for blogger platform if you’re willing to post tutorials and badges for your readers.

For this you have to take two simple steps,

Step 1

You have to add a special code inside your blogger template. Go to your blogger Dashboard > Layout > Edit HTML. Now hit CTRL+D on your keyboard and search this tag,

Now each time you create a post and you need to add some HTML codes inside your post, you have to convert it into escapable characters. For this go to this tool called Quick escape and insert your code. Click, “Convert to escaped character” the converted code will be different than the original.

Now create a new blog post and add the converted code. You have to enclosed the code with a “pre” tag(marked as blue) For this I’ve added the same code twice. One normally and the other one with the hack.

Publish your post and see the magic! The normal code showed up with the effect but the hacked on remained intact inside the table.

MTN, GLO, ETISALAT AND AIRTEL INTERNET ACCESS AND SETTINGS

Internet Access:
This service is ideal for high-end devices such as Communicators, PDAs and Data cards.
With Internet Access you will get full access to internet and internet based services such as IM, attachment downloads and so on.

Mobile internet settings:
These are configuration setting that you will apply to your mobile devices whenever you want to connect to connect internet with your mobile device. In order to connect to the internet you will need some setting, and those settings differs in each network and charges are applied according to your network.

I will give you setting for some of the networks that are in Nigeria i.e. MTN, Glo, Etisalat, and Airtel

If you’re not using an MTN-branded device, you can request for MTN GPRS or 3.5G settings by typing the word SETTINGS as an SMS and send to 3888 at no cost. The University of Ilorin invites Candidates who have applied for admission into
the Undergraduate degree programmes of the University for the 2011/2012
academic session to upload the required information for the Screening Exercise
between Monday 18th July, 2011 and Saturday, 6th August 2011. All results
intended for use for the 2011/2012 admission must be uploaded not later than
15th August, 2011 when the Portal shall be closed. Candidates awaiting any
result should please note. The Pre-admission Screening Exercise will commence
on the 8th August, 2011 at Ilorin and Lagos centres .
Physically challenged candidates are advised to pick Ilorin Centre
The following categories of candidates are eligible:
A. UME candidates who made the University of Ilorin their first and/or second
choice and scored:
i) a minimum of 200 marks in the UTME for courses other than those
listed in (ii) and (iii) below,
and five (5) ‘O’ level Credits in relevant subjects at not more than
two sittings.
(ii) a score of 220 marks in UTME for Accounting, Biochemistry,
Business Administration, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering,
Computer Science, Common Law, Economics, English, Electrical
Engineering, Finance, Geology, Industrial Chemistry, Mass
Communication, Mechanical Engineering, Microbiology, Pharmacy
and Veterinary Medicine and five (5) ‘O’ level Credits in relevant
subjects at not more than two sittings.
iii) MB;BS candidates who obtained:
(a) a score of 240 marks in the UTME and
(b) Credit Passes at one sitting only in the Senior Secondary School
Certificate Examination or its equivalence in each of the following
subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and
Biology.
B. DIRECT ENTRY candidates who made the University of Ilorin their first
and/or second choice and have obtained a minimum of:
(i) Upper Credit at OND/HND/Diploma (except for Statistics, Agriculture,
Performing Arts and History, where Lower Credit may be considered).
Also, note that the Department of Business Administration will not
accept National Diploma in Business Administration or Diploma in
Marketing.
(ii) Merit in NCE; and
(iii) A minimum of two (2) Advanced level passes in two relevant subjects.
(iv) MB;BS candidates must have obtained a minimum of:
(a) 13 points in IJMB or GCE Advanced Level Examination in the
relevant subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology or
(b) Second Class (Upper Division) Honours Degree in Zoology,
Microbiology, Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry or any other
relevant courses in the Basic Sciences.
All candidates must strictly disclose the choice of courses they applied for
originally with JAMB as well as any proposed change of course. Candidates
seeking change of course will be required to pay the sum of Two thousand
naira (N2,000.00) only before registration can be completed. Withholding
of information or wrong information will lead to instant disqualification.

C. Foreign candidates who have not taken part in the UTME or filled Direct
Entry form can reach the University Admissions Officer at
admissionsofficer@unilorin.edu.ng for information on admission into the
University. Foreign candidates will not be required to make any payment at
this stage.

D. Specific Instructions for Screening:
University of Ilorin charges N1,000.00 only for the Screening Exercise.
Procure the virtual card (i.e. Confirmation order number and Receipt

JAMB EXAMINATION DATE - UTME 2011

Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced Saturday, June 18, 2011 as the new date for the conduct of the 2011 UTME.

JAMB Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor ‘Dibu Ojerinde, who announced the shift in date in Abuja, on Wednesday, said the new date, as approved by the Federal Government, was to avoid a clash in date with the ongoing National Examinations Council (NECO)’s Senior Secondary School Examinations (SSCE).

The board had earlier set Saturday, 11th June, 2011 for the conduct of the 2011 UTME. It will be recalled that JAMB had first shifted the date of the conduct of the examination from April, 2011 to allow for the conduct of the 2011 general election. But new change in date, the Nigerian Tribune learnt, was as a result of pressure from parents of some of the candidates who were currently sitting for the NECO examinations and had registered to participate in the forthcoming UTME.

A statement by the JAMB Public Relations Officer, Mr Timothy Oyedeji, quoted the JAMB boss as saying that “the change has become inevitable as a result of the clash in date (i.e. 11th June, 2011) earlier fixed with the ongoing NECO examinations.” He said: “For instance, sizeable students who have applied to write UTME would also be sitting for the National Examinations Council’s Biology (Practicals) on Friday, 10th June, 2011, and as such, may not be able to travel after their NECO examinations to sit for the scheduled 2011 UTME on Saturday, 11th June, 2011.”

Ojerinde said the government was mindful of the fact that the board had been inundated with requests from parents of children who chose towns outside their present’s locations to reconsider and shift the date to June 18, 2011 as against the earlier fixed date for the 2011 UTME.

Since the launch of the DStv Mobile broadcast service in Nigeria, the service has been offered at no subscription cost as part of the introductory phase. DSTV Mobile is here Nigeria. With the service, Nigerians no longer need to worry about missing their favourite DStv programmes, news, live football matches, including all matches of the FIFA World Cup because DStv Mobile would give you the same value you could get from the TV edition of DSTV.

The advantage of subscribing to DStv Mobile is that no matter where you are, as long as you are connected to the DStv Mobile, you will not miss anything. DStv Mobile is not exactly a new service. It was initially launched in 2007 but with FIFA World Cup around the corner, Multichoice (operators of DStv) found a need to re-launch the DStv Mobile service. The re-launch is borne out of a collaboration between DStv, MTN (Africa’s leading telecom operator) and Nokia (world leading mobile phone manufacturer).

The technology behind DStv Mobile is simple enough. The Mobile TV service is not streamed over the internet. Though one of the promises of 3G was Mobile TV, streaming live TV over the internet turned out to be impractical. Pushing a data-intensive service over a cellular network would simply result in a very congested network. Broadcasting mobile TV over the airwaves is much more efficient and cost-effective. In comes DVB-H. I summarized the following DVB-H definition from Wikipedia:

DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting – Handheld) is one of three prevalent mobile TV formats. It is a technical specification for bringing broadcast services to mobile handsets. From March 2008, DVB-H is officially endorsed by the European Union as the “preferred technology for terrestrial mobile broadcasting”. DVB-H technology is a superset of the very successful DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting – Terrestrial) system for digital terrestrial television, with additional features to meet the specific requirements of handheld, battery-powered receivers.

S40 Phones can now send JAR Applications to other phones. This is a Simple Tutorial on HOW TO SEND JAR FILE FROM YOUR S40 PHONE TO OTHERS. As an S40 User You cannot Share Application among yourselves except you are the Smart type. Once any applicationin jar extension is installed on the phone it becomes copyrighted content. But in order to bypass this difficulty I found a way. I am going to show you now.

In order to be able to send a jar file from your nokia s40 phone to other bluetooth-enabled phone; you will need two applications to perform this action.

[1.] UCWeb Browser. Any of this version 6.3 | 6.5 | 6.6 | 6.7 | 7.0.
[2.] BT FILE Manager OR Blue FTP

STEPS
Get these two apps and install on your phone. You will then be able to send jar applications to other Bluetooth Enable Java Phones by following these steps:

[1.] The First Step is to have jar files downloaded with Ucweb browser on your phone. Do not make any change in the file you downloaded with Ucweb browser. Just leave it in the form it was downloaded to your phone.

[2.] Any time you want to share your App with a friend, just open your BT FILE Manager or Bluetooth Ftp and tell your friend to switch On his own bluetooth. With BT File Manager locate the file you want to share on your phone. Mark the file and copy it.

[3.] Then click back option to search for your friend phone. After you have make a connection with him. Locate his folders, and paste the marked file you want to share with him in his application or games folder, NOTE: You can Paste it in any Folder you like.

[4.] Now rename the file you have transfered to that phone from _ jar to .jar
( from underscore jar to dot jar). That file will then change to the application you expected. At first it reads 'invalid file' or unsupported format file. You do not need to panic when you see this happen, just rename the app to dot jar.

[5.] Switch off your phone for some seconds or 1 minute and switch On again. If you click to open the app and your phone ask youto delete the invalid app. After that your phone will on longer complain about the app again. You can now begin to use the application. This trick has been tested and confirmed. Enjoy your trick.

Configure Nokia C3 with Globacom Mobile Internet Settings

Nokia C3 can be manually configured to browse the internet using Globacom Internet. Unlike MTN, Etisalat and Airtel, Globacom Nigeria has different access point names (APN) for different internet services. If you want to use Globacom Internet Bundles with your phone ( irrespective of the model or maker) , you must make sure you configure your phone to use :

gloflat as the APN,
flat as the username
flat as the password.

If you can configure your phone to use those three parameters as the default web/internet settings, then you will be able to browse the internet with your phone using Globacom bundles.

Access Point Configuration

From your Nokia c3 Menu, Go to Settings --> Configuration. Then scroll down till you see “Personal Settings”. Select it. Click on “Options”, select “Add New”. Choose “Access Point”. You will see : “Account name” and “Access Point Settings”. Enter "GloAPN” or any name as the “Account name”. Thereafter, Select “Access Point settings”, then “Bearer settings”. You will then see a list of settings you can change. Just edit them as listed below:

Packet data access pt: gloflat
Network type: IPv4
Authentication type: Normal
Username: flat
Password: flat

Once you are done, just select “Back” 3 times. You should see the new APN you created in a list under “Personal accounts” with a G-like icon.

Activating the Access Point

From your Nokia c3 Menu, Go to Settings ; Connectivity ; Packet Data. You will see: “Packet Data Connection” and “Packet Data Settings”. Set “Packet Data Connection to “Always Online” . Then select “Packet Data Settings”. You will see: “Active Access Point” and “Edit Active Access Point”. Select “Active Access Point” and you should see a list of Access Points. Just choose the one you created above ( which I named GloAPN as explained above) and select “Activate”.

Web Settings Configuration

From your Nokia c3 Menu, Go to Settings ; Configuration. Scroll down till you see “Personal Settings”. Select it. Then click on “Options”, click “Add New”. Choose “Web”. You will then see a list of settings you can change. Just edit them as listed below:

Account Name: Glo ( You can use any name)
Homepage: http://www.NairaMan.com ( You can use any url)
Username: flat
Password: flat
Use preferred access pt: Yes

Then just select “Back” by pressing the RSK. You would see the new Web Setting you created in a list under “Personal accounts”. Then, highlight this Web setting, select “Options” and select “Activate”.

Phone Configuration

From your Nokia c3 Menu, Go to Settings ; Configuration. You will see: “Default config. settings” , “Default in all apps” , “Preferred Access Point” and “Personal Settings”. Just edit them as listed below:

Default config. settings = choose “Personal config”
Default in all apps = Yes
Preferred Access Point = choose the Access Point created earlier ( GloAPN)
Personal settings = Just leave it the way it is

Configuring Your Phone’s Web Browser

From your Nokia C3 Menu, Go to “Internet”. Scroll down till you see “Web Settings”. Select it. Then scroll down to “Configuration Settings”. Select it. You will then see: “Configuration” and “Account”. Select “Configuration” and choose “Personal config” from the list. This simply ensures that your phone’s browser uses the “personal configuration” you created manually.

That should be all. Just use a Globacom SIM with active Internet bundle subscription into the phone, you should be able to access the internet.

Nearly two millennia ago the disciples of Jesus of Nazareth asked Him a question that has intrigued people ever since: "What shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?" (Matthew 24:3, King James Version).

People in every generation since have wondered about this. Will the world literally end? If so, how? Why? And when? What does the Bible really say about this crucial and disturbing question?

Religious people aren't the only ones asking these questions. In recent decades people from many walks of life have expressed concern about the possibility of the end of the world as we know it. Politicians, educators and scientists foresee the potential destruction of our world from a number of causes—including nuclear warfare, environmental disaster, planetary pollution, overpopulation, killer diseases and collision with a comet or asteroid.

Potential devastation from the sky

Although some of these possibilities are unlikely, others present a real threat. Based on the increasing number of gigantic impact craters discovered in recent years, scientists believe that a collision between earth and a killer asteroid is inevitable.

What would be the result of such a violent encounter? "An asteroid only a kilometer across would create cosmic havoc by impacting on the earth," writes Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics at City College of New York. ". . . If it hit the oceans, the tidal wave it created could be a mile high, enough to flood most coastal cities on earth" (Visions: How Science Will Revolutionize the 21st Century, 1997, p. 317).

In 1908 a meteor or comet exploded over a remote area of Siberia. Though it was relatively small, with an estimated diameter of only about 50 yards, it flattened 1,000 square miles of forest, felling 80 million trees. The energy released by that celestial missile is estimated to be about equal to that of a large hydrogen bomb. The resulting tremors were recorded as far away as London. The increasing nuclear threat

Experts generally agree that, of all possible means of destroying humanity, nuclear weapons pose the greatest threat.

And the genie cannot be put back in the bottle. Austrian theologian Ulrich Kortner put it this way: "The nuclear threat . . . constitutes not a temporary, but rather an irrevocable global threat. The actual possibility of an end to all life is now a constituent part of our reality" (The End of the World: A Theological Interpretation, 1995, pp. 229-230, emphasis added).

Some sober scientists go even farther, saying that nuclear annihilation is inevitable. The late Carl Sagan, perhaps the world's best-known scientist before his death in 1996, wrote that "the development of nuclear weapons and their delivery systems will, sooner or later, lead to global disaster" (Cosmos, 1980, p. 328).

With the Cold War ended, the probability of all-out nuclear war between countries has lessened for the time being, but the continuing addition of more nations to the nuclear club ratchets the threat back upward.

If North Korea has successfully developed nuclear weapons—as it has strongly hinted it has done—the nuclear club of nations now totals 10. More than 50,000 nuclear weapons exist in the world, many in dangerously unstable places. No one dares dismiss the idea that terrorist groups, if they can get their hands on nuclear devices, will use them in pursuit of their deadly aims.

Optimistic scientists believe that, thanks to continuing discoveries in science and technology, the nations will realize they must cooperate and work together to develop a unified global civilization. However, admits Dr. Kaku, "in the background always lurks the possibility of a nuclear war, the outbreak of a deadly pandemic, or a collapse of the environment" (p. 19).
Is time running out?

Reagan expressed concern that Armageddon may occur in our generation. His defense secretary, Casper Weinberger, observed: "I believe the world is going to end—by an act of God, I hope—but every day I think time is running out" (quoted by Reginald Stackhouse, The End of the World, 1997, p. viii).

Former French president Valery Giscard d'Estaing commented on the state of humanity: "The world is unhappy because it doesn't know where it is going and because it senses that, if it knew, it would discover that it was heading for disaster" (ibid.).

Former U.S. vice president Al Gore speculated on the longevity of the world: "Two world wars, the Holocaust, the invention of nuclear weapons, and now the global environmental crisis have led many of us to wonder if survival . . . is possible" (Earth in the Balance, 1992, p. 366).

Indeed, experts from many fields share the concern that we could see the end of civilization as we know it. These concerns have created an age of anxiety, especially in a world where so little seems certain anymore.

Many others, however, say there is no need to be concerned about the world ending. They point to epidemics of end-time panic that have raged in the past. They list many failed past predictions regarding the end of the world.

Such criticism is justified to a point. Doomsday predictions have abounded for centuries; date-setters have been wrong many times. The problem with most of these prognostications was that, though well intentioned, the specific chronological details were the ideas of men who badly misinterpreted information in Scripture.

Is there a source to which we can go for reliable information? There is! That one reliable source is the Bible—what it really says. Many people today have a vague idea that the Bible says something about the end of the world. Does it? Most certainly!
The end of an age

Although we do not know the time, one thing we know for sure is that the Bible prophesies the end of the world as we know it. But what does that mean?

When Jesus'disciples asked Him about "the end of the world," they weren't talking about "world" in the sense of our physical planet, the earth. The Greek word translated "world" is aion, from which we get the English word eon. The two mean essentially the same thing—an age, an epoch, an era .

Christ's followers well knew the many prophecies of the Old Testament that foretell the coming age of the Messiah. Our present time, the time of human rule on earth under the deceptive sway of Satan (1 John 5:19), is described by the apostle Paul as "this present evil age" (Galatians 1:4).

Another Greek word translated "world" in the New Testament is kosmos, which denotes the ordered world around us—that is, not the physical planet we live on but man's society and geopolitical dominion. This is what will end.

Paul and the other apostles understood that, at the end of this age, man's corrupt civilization will be swept away and a new era will dawn at the return of Christ. Peter described this change as one in which "times of refreshing" will come from God the Father through Jesus, who will return from heaven when "the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets" (Acts 3:19-21, New International Version).

This transition from man's misrule—which is, in reality, the unrecognized rule of Satan—to Christ's divine reign in the Kingdom of God was at the heart of the messages of the biblical prophets as well as the gospel Jesus taught. Scripture proclaims that the present age—the civilization and societies we know today—will terminate in a cascade of unimaginable destruction and violence that will climax at the return of Christ. In the New Testament alone, more than 300 verses refer to these events.
Signs of the end time

When Jesus' disciples asked about the end of the age (Matthew 24:3), He responded by listing several warning signs. The first would be massive religious deception, including religious teachers who, while claiming to represent Him, would not follow His teachings but would deceive many through a counterfeit Christianity.

He also said there would be many wars and other conflicts between nations and ethnic groups. He also spoke of famines,massive disease epidemics and earthquakes.

The problem with trying to precisely predict the end from these signs is that these trends and conditions have been with us in varying degrees from the first century until now. This helps explain why end-time fervor has arisen repeatedly for two millennia.

Many believe that man's development of modern weaponry with the ability to annihilate human life is a sure sign of the last days. As for this destructive potential being a sign of the end, Jesus did say that "if that time of troubles were not cut short, no living thing could survive" (Matthew 24:22, Revised English Bible, emphasis added throughout).

Our awesome scientific and technological advancements have bequeathed to this and future generations a heritage over which hangs the ultimate sword of Damocles. Indeed, without miraculous intervention from God the human race has no assurance of survival.

However, we should realize the sobering fact that, no matter when the end of the age comes, people will be living at that time who will dispute the possibility of the world ending. Under inspiration of God, the apostle Peter tells us that "scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts, and saying, 'Where is the promise of His coming?'" (2 Peter 3:3-4).

Regardless of when it occurs, there will be people who express disdain even as the very time approaches. No matter how difficult things look, some will assure everyone that man has everything under control. Tragically, such assurances will do nothing but provide a false sense of security, leading people to foolishly continue to trust in human ability rather than in God.
As the end approaches

However long it is until the actual end of the age, one theme the biblical writers emphasized is that it draws nearer every day. Paul warns us that "now it is high time to awake out of sleep; for now our salvation is nearer than when we first believed" (Romans 13:11).

And salvation is certainly important to keep in mind as everything falls to pieces around us. The end of the world as we know it, though it includes many catastrophes on a scale never seen in history, is not all bad news for mankind. It includes good news too. God will intervene before it is too late (Matthew 24:21-22). The alternative is not only the destruction of human civilization but the annihilation of the human race itself.

The only wise action for anyone who understands what is coming is to turn to God with repentance and obedience (Acts 3:19). Indeed, "now [God] commands all people everywhere to repent. For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed [i.e., Jesus Christ]" (Acts 17:30-31, NIV).

When Jesus comes in power and glory, He will rebuke the world for its sins. This is part of the message proclaimed from the beginning of the true Christian Church. On the day of the Church's founding, the apostle Peter exhorted his audience, "Be saved from this perverse generation" (Acts 2:40).

This is the message the Church is still commissioned to proclaim. How were the people to be saved? Peter urged them to repent—to turn from their own sinful, selfish ways and to seek God's ways—and to be baptized (Acts 2:38). At His second coming Christ will reward those who do so.
Focus not on timing but preparation

It is not a question of whether the world—man's corrupt civilization—will end. God's Word says it will. Our chief concern should not be when it will end. Jesus said it would be impossible for men to precisely calculate this ahead of time (Matthew 24:36, 42, 44).

Instead, our main focus should be to seek God to be spiritually prepared for the times that are coming. "But keep on the alert at all times," said Jesus, "praying in order that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man" (Luke 21:36, New American Standard Bible).

The Bible describes believers as living in a state of expectancy, in a state of tension, between two worlds. We live in the present world, which we know will end, while we look for the world to come with the return of Christ. "So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him" (Matthew 24:44, NIV).

We need to seek God in heartfelt repentance and faith, leading to baptism by God's true ministers so we can receive God's Spirit (Acts 2:37-39). Then we are to remain faithfully obedient while awaiting Jesus' return. For "he who endures to the end shall be saved" (Matthew 24:13).

Jesus never said the Christian calling would be easy. On the contrary, He said it would be challenging (Matthew 7:13-14). The reward, though, is great, far beyond anything we can imagine.
